While research on how to foster students’ engagement with feedback has increased, this paper aims to investigate an under-researched topic: the relationship between students’ feedback experience and cognitive engagement with feedback in online environments. To this purpose, an online questionnaire was designed and administered to a sample of 1766 undergraduates. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate descriptive statistics and also bivariate inferential statistics. Results provide empirical evidence that confirms that feedback experience is one of the key elements of the stage prior to engagement with feedback. Feedback frequency, timing, type of feedback and options for resubmission should be considered in feedback design, as it is only through these elements that better cognitive engagement with feedback can be achieved.
