Developing the Faculty Developers: An Underexplored Realm in Professional Education

Sat, April 23, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The range of programming and initiatives led by faculty developers to assist faculty members in their roles is almost as remarkable as the number of people that are entering the field and making faculty development their career. What remains still unexplored in this area is the nature of professional learning for faculty developers, with the literature being largely silent. Using a mixed-survey, we surveyed faculty developers and qualitatively and quantitatively analysed the results. Our study identified trends in learning preferences, impact of programs, and key design elements that need to be present. We conclude by offering future lines of inquiry and a set of distilled recommendations for the field to more effectively advance the learning of faculty and staff.
