Latent Profile Analysis of Burnout in Canadian Teachers During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

During the initial wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, 1930 Canadian teachers were surveyed about their burnout and resilience levels using the Maslach Burnout Inventory, as well as their perceptions of 5 job demands and 15 internal and external resources. Latent profile analysis revealed that teachers were responding to their experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic in five distinct patterns or profiles of burnout or resilience, including a small group who were thriving. Survey data were then used to match each profile group with their salient demands and resources, revealing that—similar to students globally-- teachers were also experiencing inequities in their experiences of the pandemic. A continuum model of recommendations is offered to support teacher resilience within each profile group.
