Semantic network analysis and cluster analysis are new and innovative methods for analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data. In analysis of data collected from a design based research trial of a student created textbook based on constructivist and constructionist principles, network analysis and Girvan-Newman cluster analysis were used to find patterns and interpret data based on theoretical frameworks. The purpose of this study was to determine if this new method of analysis was effective at replacing the axial coding traditionally used in grounded theory research applications. Findings are relevant in terms of the usefulness and applications of these analysis methods, and what was learned about how to most effectively apply network analysis and cluster analysis in similar research.
