The switch to emergency remote teaching (ERT) as result of COVID outbreak had empirically proven effects on several outcomes of students. Since, the school closures were a novelty, little is known about learning environments that foster students` abilities to cope with homeschooling requirements. The presented study aims at (1) investigating the direct and indirect effect of teacher competencies in distance education on students` self-rated academic achievement and (2) the analysis of the moderation effect of the ‘COoperative, Open Learning format (COOL)’ on those relations. Results imply that self-regulation skills and intrinsic motivation of students` are vital for effective learning during lockdown for all students, while feedback culture proves to mediate the effect of teacher competencies on achievement only in COOL-classes.
