Profiles of Teachers' Perceptions of School Climate in Elementary School Among Teachers Serving Latinx Students

Abstract

The current study examines profiles of teachers’ perceptions of climate and explores contextual predictors of these latent profiles. Using the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study – Kindergarten Cohort (ECLS-K:2011), we draw on a nationally representative sample of 1,460 teachers and 4,050 Latinx students from the spring of 1st grade. Findings revealed four distinct profiles: (1) Striving, (2) Thriving, (3) Managing, and (4) Struggling. The contextual factors of more years of teaching experience, lower concentrations of English Learners in the classroom, and lower percentages of non-white students and eligible for free/reduced priced lunch were positive predictors of membership in optimal profiles. Findings from this study can guide future efforts to reduce vulnerabilities Latinx students might encounter as they navigate (un)supportive school environments.
