Oftentimes the work of researchers does not reach the audience it aims to impact. Podcasting offers one way for research to reach a broader audience through more equitable, inclusive, and accessible practices. We wondered how podcasts were currently being used to disseminate research and information and how podcasting supports practices of public scholarship. To date, there is no systematic review that provides answers to our questions. Hence, this review presents a synthesis of 7 empirical studies, across disciplinary fields, that examine how podcasting is used to disseminate knowledge to a public audience. The analysis uncovers inconsistent terminology used to name public scholarship and few available empirical studies. Findings include how podcasts expand audiences, promote conversations, and boost access to information.
