Abstract

Global competence education (GCED) allows learners to understand, examine, and engages with significant issues and challenges that affect workplaces, communities and the world, such as global pandemic, injustice, sustainability. This transnational mixed-methods study examined the quality, scope and provision of GCED in 46 top ranked universities in Canada, USA, UK, and China. The study revealed that the majority of faculty participants are competent, interested and engaged in conducting global competence education, however, they have a divergent understanding of the concept. A lack of clearly defined theoretical framework, supportive institutional policy, and unsafe academic culture for examining controversial issues/perspectives are identified as barriers in providing global competence education to all students in a systematic approach.
