Understanding Lived Experiences of LGBTQ Students of Color as They Navigate U.S. Public High Schools

Abstract

Utilizing a descriptive phenomenological design, this study examined the lived experiences of four LGBTQ students of color as they navigated through public high school in Southern New Mexico. The intent of this study was to understand, from students themselves, the experiences LGBTQ students of color have in New Mexico public high schools and the impacts of these experiences. Findings revealed that overall participants: 1) experienced lasting effects from harassment and discrimination; 2) spoke about inequity, support, and leadership within their schools; and 3) shared instances of growth over time. In addition to emerging themes, we discuss participants’ recommendations for reimagining high schools and building institutions that embrace equity and justice for LGBTQ students of color.
