Wisdom Seekers: Reimagining the Possibilities for K–12 Education

Sun, April 24, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

While many argue that wisdom should be woven into education, explicit attention to wisdom development is lacking. Given our nascent emergence from a global pandemic, alongside pressing social and racial justice issues, we explore attention to wisdom as an activity of knowing that merges knowledge, heart, and action which may serve to imbue meaning and purpose into schooling for students from all backgrounds. In this study we explore whether and how such opportunities might be fostered in public schools by examining content area standards for portals to educating for wisdom. Initial findings indicate a variety of entry points that, when intentionally activated, weave together various threads of wisdom, such as connection to self, advocacy, personal meaning, and discernment.
