Abstract

This study investigates online self-regulated learning (SRL) in relation to students’ perceived community of inquiry (CoI) and online learning attitudes with a person-centered approach. Participants were 750 undergraduate students in courses unexpectedly shifting from face-to-face to online due to the pandemic. We conducted latent profile analyses and five online SRL profiles - lowest, low with limited social skills, below average, moderately and highly regulated profiles– were detected. These SRL profiles associated with the perceived CoI and online learning attitudes differently; specifically, moderately and highly regulated profiles demonstrated higher perception of CoI and positive online learning attitudes. Our findings suggest that in emergency online learning, promoting SRL skills is crucial to sustain learning under the CoI framework.
