Early Predictors of Math Disabilities in Students Who Are English Learners

Abstract

This longitudinal study investigated the predictive value of numeracy academic skills on identifying math difficulties and mathematical disabilities. A battery of tests administered assessed numeracy, (rapid digit naming, magnitude comparisons, calculation, and line estimation) and vocabulary measures in both English and Spanish to elementary-level students for three consecutive years. The results of a multilevel logistic regression indicated that first grade measures of English magnitude comparisons, Spanish line estimation and Spanish receptive vocabulary uniquely predicted MD group classifications (average achieving, at risk for MD, MD) at grade 3. Results indicated that English magnitude comparisons, Spanish line estimation, and Spanish receptive vocabulary in first grade increased odds of classifying students with MD and at risk for MD in third grade.
