A Comparative Study on the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic Among the Most Vulnerable Higher Education Students in Indonesia and Vietnam: First-Generation, Rural, and Low-Income Students

Abstract

Current studies have explored the questions, “How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected higher education students, and which ones have been impacted the most?” However, no current comparative studies have explored this question for the Southeast Asia (SEA) - a region that is ranked among the most rapidly industrializing, urbanizing and economically growing in the world before the COVID-19 pandemic hit (Djalante et. al., 2020) - specifically for developing countries such as Indonesia and Vietnam that share some commonalities. We bridge this gap in this literature. Using over than 2600 sample, we have found that first-gen, rural and low-income students face more barriers in their studies during the pandemic than their counterparts. Implications and policy recommendations about this topic are discussed.
