Workplace Climate and Faculty Career Satisfaction: Exploring Research Culture

Abstract

Drawing on national data, this study contributes new evidence on the association between workplace climate and career satisfaction among a national sample of 939 early-to-mid career faculty members across all fields. In addition, while much of the discourse surrounding doctoral graduates covers the debate between academic and non-academic careers, there is less attention to career diversity within the faculty ranks, including between faculty who spend most of their time conducting research versus other activities. Differences between faculty who identify research as their primary job responsibility versus teaching, administration, or professional services are also explored. We provide implications for doctoral training, early career faculty development, and departmental and institutional and research culture.
