We Are Done Surviving: Counternarratives as a Vehicle for Rescripting the Silencing of BIWOC Students

Abstract

In academic spaces, BIWOC are often silenced and our perspectives are frequently undervalued (Levins Morales, 2001). Our presentation centers the question: how do we grapple with impacts of systemic oppressions through collective theory-making and counter-storytelling? Inspired by ongoing work of decolonization (Tuck and Yang, 2012), radical love and collective liberation (Love, 2019), the balanced relations and the spirit of the Commons (Federici, 2019), through collective counter-storytelling and Critical Race Methodology (Solórzano and Yosso, 2001), we explore the homemade theory (hooks, 1994) of our own schooling experiences. As 1st-generation Black, 1st-generation Filipina, and 7th-generation Chicana/Indigenous women writing together, we posit creating space for our own marginalized voices through our stories while recentering embodied knowledge production of BIWOC in academic spaces.
