Abstract

Journalism and mass communication (JMC) schools have traditionally trained students in dedicated campus spaces with dedicated technologies. JMC educators have been challenged by the task of adapting experiential curriculum to online learning spaces. This Delphi study assembled a panel of JMC educators with expertise in online teaching and learning to create a framework of pedagogical practices and instructional design strategies for experiential learning tasks in online modalities. The panel reached consensus on 36 primary and 59 ancillary statements. The resulting framework, called The EXCEL Online Framework, is framed by the Cognitive Apprenticeship Model and provides JMC educators with contextualized online teaching practices grounded in learning theory.
