Austerity Is the Price of Patriotism: Infantile Citizenship, the State, and Democratic Education

Abstract

In this paper, I offer “infantile citizenship” as one way to understand the intersections of financial education and patriotic education initiatives in K-5.The study analyses curricula from three states as well as policy documents related to patriotic education and financial education in the U.S. The study is intended to more fully understand possibilities for and challenges to democratic education brought about by these initiatives.
