Raising Awareness Through Counterstories: A Qualitative Study Exploring Institutional Constraints Latinx Community College Students Face

Although the Latinx population is the fastest-growing nonwhite group in the US, this growth is not mirrored in higher education degree completion rates at four-year institutions. One important reason is that Latinx students are not transferring from community colleges to four-year institutions to obtain bachelor's degrees at rates similar to other student populations. This qualitative study examined non-financial hurdles Latinx students face, utilizing semi-structured interviews and CRT/LatCrit and Community Cultural Wealth theories as lenses in a methodology of counter-storytelling. The barriers range from (1) juggling home life while going to college,(2) mental health issues to (3) microaggressions and negative stereotypes. The data also unveiled (1) support they received and (2) cultural assets they used to navigate the transfer process.
