Text Censorship in Catholic Schools: Framing of Consensus and Resistance Arguments

Should students have the "freedom to read,” or should text censorship be permissible in Catholic school libraries? This frame analysis explores how Catholic School insiders and outsiders within three specific instances have constructed their consensus or resistance arguments towards text censorship. For each case, data sources were found through an extensive search of media posts, primary sources, and blog comments. Results uncover trends in responses to Catholic School’s framing of text censorship and the importance of relevancy and transparency. Grounded in Democratic Education Theory (Gutmann, 1988), this analysis calls for Catholic Schools to prioritize deliberation when making decisions around censorship.
