De-Minoritized, Marginalized, Invisible: Asians in Medical Education Leadership

Abstract

Asians are over-represented in the STEM fields compared to their representation in the general population. As “over-represented minorities,” they are counted as a part of the White majority. This categorization conceals systemic inequities that Asians face especially when it comes to moving into positions of leadership.

This study uses the US medical schools’ faculty data and the parity index calculation to assess percentage representation of Asians in faculty compared to their percentage representation in leadership positions at medical schools.

The findings reveal a large disparity in the representation of Asians in leadership at medical schools. To create more equitable learning environments, it is time to look beyond aggregate percentage numbers and broad categorizations to the hidden inequities in the system.
