Critical Race Theory and Mixed-Methods Research: A Scoping Review

Abstract

As educational researchers respond to the current debate around critical race theory (CRT) playing out in legislation across the US, the field is challenging us to imagine new ways of conducting inquiry. In this scoping review, we build on Morgan and Hammersley’s 2018 debate over the possibility of an indistinguishability thesis within mixed methods research (MMR). This exploratory scoping review demonstrates the potential a combined CRT-MMR approach truly has in addressing the integration challenge in order to reap the rewards of the integration equation of 1 + 1 = 3 (Fetter & Freshwater, 2015). It exposes the ways in which a well-defined combined methodological approach more fully embraces praxis to foster more equitable outcomes and advance the field.
