Indian Prairie School District, IL
Indian Prairie School District (IPSD) is a suburban school district serving 28,000 students in the Naperville, Aurora, Bolingbrook, and Plainfield communities outside of Chicago. IPSD set an equity goal of focusing on a cluster of 5 Title I elementary schools within the district and increasing computing opportunities within these schools. This ensured that computing was not only occurring in specific schools or parts of the district but rather reaches all students in the district. Prior to participating in the CT Pathways project, IPSD had invested in makerspaces within each school building in order to provide coding opportunities and build students’ problem solving, critical thinking, and reflection skills. IPSD also offered a variety of courses focused on technology broadly and computing more specifically. They offered robotics in all three levels (elementary, middle school, and high school). Additionally, computing was a part of technology courses in middle schools and IPSD offered a variety of computer science courses in high schools (e.g., coding, web design, Project Lead the Way Engineering and Electronics, AP Computer Science A, AP Computer Science Principles). Expanding computational thinking (CT) within the district was in their district curriculum and instruction implementation plan and had the support of the school board.
Brian Giovanini, Indian Prairie School District, IL
Brian currently serves as the Director of Innovation for Indian Prairie School District 204. In his role, Brian works closely with district leaders and teachers to support high quality instructional practices and provide authentic learning experiences for students at all levels. Brian also supports the district’s STEM programs, Library Media Centers and educational technology. Brian is currently supporting the work on K-12 pathway development, integrated opportunities for students to earn certifications and supporting instructional shifts in response to the future of work.
