Cumulative Academic Impact of Multiple Course Experiences With Instructors Who Have Received Faculty Development Training

Abstract

This study examines the cumulative impact that might occur when students take multiple courses with instructors who have completed faculty development training, using a dataset of all courses taken between fall 2015 and spring 2020 by a sample of students at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), where a group of faculty had received faculty development training through the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE). Analyses found that students’ ACUE “dosage” was associated with better academic outcomes, even when outcomes were restricted to courses taught by instructors who had not started any ACUE courses. In addition, correlations with passing and success were significantly larger for Black students compared to White students.
