Responding to the Times: Adapting an Evaluation Study During a Dual Pandemic

Abstract

As recent studies indicate state authorizing bodies approve diverse-by-design schools at a higher rate than any other school model, little research exists on the impact of this school type on key outcomes pertaining to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). This paper contributes to this gap in scholarship by examining an Equity Audit tool developed by Beloved Community, a DEI consulting nonprofit organization. The paper outlines a mixed-methods research study to both validate the Equity Audit tool as well as to provide detailed insights on diverse-by-design school DEI practices. The paper also chronicles the methodological pivots generated while conducting this research during both the COVID-19 pandemic and nationwide protests in response to police brutality and the murder of George Floyd.
