Abstract

This qualitative case study examines how one bilingual teacher’s activism and commitment to the community she serves influenced and manifested in the classroom and outside of the classroom in public and professional spaces. Drawing on sociocultural perspectives of language and literacy, activism is positioned as a literacy and as such, a transformative act. Case findings point to the teacher’s activism and commitment and how it influences the ways in which the teacher views and enacts activist work inside and outside of the classroom. I argue that Ms. White’s activist stance and critical consciousness frames how she enacts her activism with students and community.
