The COVID-19 pandemic created substantial challenges for educating very young children and those who are learning English as a new language, including Dual Language Learners (DLLs) and English Learners (ELs). The lack of research guidance on how to teach these students in distance learning prompted our organization to collaborate with a school district partner on an action research project aimed at increasing student engagement and oral language production among kindergarten students, particularly ELs. This study focuses on teacher meaning-making and learning, and how this is manifested in teachers’ approach to and interpretation of their teaching. It shows how teachers’ mental models and language practices influenced the emergence of a third space for supporting ELs in distance learning.
