A Golden Opportunity: The Black Professoriate and Graduation Rates at Predominantly White Institutions

Abstract

In this quantitative study, we examine the relationship between six year college completion rates for Black and White students at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) and the percentage of Black faculty on campus. Using 2019 data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and College Scorecard, we regress graduation rates on measures of Black faculty while controlling for institutional factors. The outcome of this study shows that increased percentages of Black faculty at PWIs can have a positive impact on the 6-year college completion rates of all students, particularly Black students.
