Toward Understanding International Education in Turkey: The Case of Cambridge Programs

The aim of this study was to investigate international education within Turkey, with particular focus being placed on Cambridge programs. Based on evidence gathered through in-depth interviews with 24 teachers and 11 school leaders from seven cities within Turkey, some issues regarding the understanding of the place and role of Cambridge programs in the Turkish education system were raised. These issues included the possibilities of a resurgence of elitism in education, a case for democracy and equity for students, a core foundation for further educational opportunities, and a risk towards a discordance of curricula. The wider implications of these issues were explored, concluding that the Cambridge programs in Turkey should have a more carefully planned and critical curriculum implementation strategy.
