Teacher Competences in Higher Education: A Systematic Review Study With a Focus on Equity

Abstract

This systematic review study was conducted to provide a comprehensive updated analysis of the pedagogical competences of the higher education teacher. A total of 62 empirical articles that describe the components of teaching competence (knowledge, skills, and attitudes), retrieved from seven international databases in three languages, were reviewed. Curriculum and instructional competence is the most present, along with personal skills and qualities. Communicative competence follows. Cultural competence and specific competences to respond to diversity and promote equity and social justice in higher education classrooms are almost inexistent. The results identify gaps at the professional and institutional levels in higher education, but also a path to pursue in continuous professional development in this context.
