Incorporating Student Mobility in Studies of Science Achievement: Testing a Cross-Classified Multiple Membership Model

Abstract

Previous research indicates student mobility can adversely affect student achievement due to the disruption of school-based social ties and academic routines. Extant research on mobility and growth in science achievement has been hampered by little availability of longitudinal data and limitations in conventional software that can deal with student mobility between schools properly.Our study compares the effects of student mobility on estimates of science growth from kindergarten through grade four utilizing conventional growth and CCMM modeling approaches. We also examine whether differing school contexts may contribute to growth in academic achievement in science for mobile students, controlling for student background and after properly incorporating student mobility.
