Promoting Critical Competencies and Supporting BIPOC Youth in Independent All-Girls Schools

Abstract

This session will detail findings from a study of the experiences of girl-identified BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) youth who attend elite, predominantly White, all-girls independent schools. Between 2019 and 2020, the authors of this proposal conducted research with four, all-girls, independent schools in the Midwest and on the East Coast of the United States. This session will describe how BIPOC students experience their school environment, curriculum, and broader institution, and will emphasize how independent school communities need to transform into more equitable and anti-oppressive places. Session attendees will leave with a toolkit of resources that can be helpful for educators in a range of all-girls school environments (public and independent).
