Doctor of Physical Therapist Program Directors' Perceptions of Academic Accommodations for Students With Learning Disabilities

Abstract

The proportion of students with learning disabilities (SWLDs) is on the rise nationally among doctoral students. Evidence suggests that educational strategies including supportive learning environments and accommodations have helped SWLDs to succeed in undergraduate studies. However, educational strategies for SWLDs in physical therapist (DPT) education remains unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine DPT program directors’ perceptions of SWLDs and accommodation practices. Overall, DPT program director perceptions reflect a positive and successful approach to supporting and educating SWLDs. However, there remains a relatively high percentage of SWLDs who do not complete the program. Thus, DPT programs would benefit from research collaborations between scholars in disability services to examine the career development and opportunities for SWLDs.
