Public Education and Indigenous Youth: A Climate of Racial Micro- and Macro-Aggressions

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of racial macro- and micro-aggressions as experienced by Indigenous youth who attend public schools in the U.S. southwest. The major mode of inquiry is primary source analysis of legal documents, journalistic reports, and Congressional testimony. The concept of racial affirmations informs the fourth objective that explains how Indigenous students, parents, and organizations exercised agency in challenging the racial aggressions. The paper concludes with implications for curricular and pedagogical transformation.
