Latino Men and Men of Color Programs: Research-Based Recommendations for Community College Administrators

Abstract

Despite Latino men’s increasing rate of enrollment in community colleges, limited research addresses Men of Color (MoC) programs that serve their unique needs and attend to the educational attainment disparities they experience. The purpose of this multi-sited case study is to understand how MoC program administrators at community colleges in Texas, designated as Hispanic-Serving Institutions, navigate their institutions to serve Latino men. Findings reveal challenges associated with the lack of formal establishment of their organizations within their respective colleges. We feature recommendations tailored to community college administrators seeking to improve Latino men’s success and provide strategies for MoC programs to operate successfully through cross-department collaborations rather than in silos.
