Abstract

Education around the world has experienced unprecedented disruption due to the COVID-19. It is alarming that the situation has led to severe psychological issues for university students. Rooted in the Transactional Stress and Coping model, the current study aims at exploring tertiary students’ stress-related factors during the pandemic in New Zealand -- one of the pioneering countries recovered efficiently from COVID. The study involved 193 university students using a mix-method questionnaire. The study adds to the literature by exploring specific stressors perceived by students, and the relations between stressors and coping strategies. It also provides information about predictors of the effectiveness of coping during the pandemic. The study helps educators facilitating understanding and support for students in higher education.
