Exploring Stability in Multilevel Achievement-Goal Profile Membership in Mathematics Learning in an Intelligent Tutoring System

Abstract

Building on recent work related to measuring situational, in-the-moment motivation and the stability of motivation profiles, this study explores the nature of situational achievement goal latent profiles using archived student data for middle and high school students’ algebra-focused intelligent tutoring system (ITS) learning collected across a school year. Multi-level profile analysis, nesting unit-oriented measurements within students, indicated the presence of four distinct student-level profiles. Over 65% of students changed profile membership at some time. Start-of-year dispositional motivation scores were related to student-level latent profile membership but were not related to whether students remained in the same profile across all unit-level measurements. Present findings have potential to inform motivation interventions designed for ITS math learning.
