Measuring the Impact of a Praxis Intervention for 30 Black Preservice Teachers

Abstract

The number of Black teachers grew by less than 1,000 per year between 2000 and 2018. For decades, Black test takers of the Praxis, a teacher licensure exam used in nearly 40 states, have scored lower than all racial demographic groups, one cause of the dwindling number of Black teachers. Assessments on performance, experiences, and Praxis I interventions exist; however, assessments of interventions for Black test takers of the Praxis II, a primary entry point into teaching, are scarce. This study measures the impact of an intervention focused on improving student content knowledge and test taking skills on thirty Black prospective pre-service teachers preparing for Praxis II exams at an HBCU. Data collection and analysis is in progress.
