Write or Wrong: A Transformational Game for Ethics Education

Fri, April 22, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, SIG-Design and Technology Virtual Roundtable Session Room

Abstract

Ethics education must keep pace with rapidly changing technology and research advances. New approaches, such as game-based learning, can help through introducing students to systems that simulate the ethical decisions they might later make in their professional work. This presentation introduces preliminary findings from two pilot studies of a game-based ethics education approach that uses a newly developed game to support a research ethics course at a large European university. Results suggest the game shows promise in providing an experience for players that can be later used as a reference in a course to critically discuss and examine the ethical dilemmas faced during research practice. Further work is planned to support these discussions and extend game content.
