Implementing the Montessori Method in an Undergraduate Marketing Course: A Case Study

Mon, April 25, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), AERA Virtual Poster Rooms, AERA Virtual Poster Room 1

Abstract

The call for proposals for AERA 2022 suggests the field of education is facing unprecedented challenges in equipping students with skills to thrive in the 21st Century, asking “What kinds of formal and informal learning experiences and environments enable the development of these skills?” This case study investigated one possible answer based on implementing a progressive approach for undergraduate students. We followed an upper-level, elective marketing course that implemented a Montessori approach in order to investigate if it could be effective in engaging and motivating college students, even though the approach is typically associated with younger students. Results suggested both promising outcomes as well as challenges that can inform future efforts to introduce innovative approaches in undergraduate education.
