Sat, April 23, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, SIG-Measurement and Assessment in Higher Education Virtual Paper Session Room

Abstract

This study investigated students’ social goals, the motivational patterns of building connections with their learning companions in the blended-learning Statistics classrooms. The blended classrooms consisted of face-to-face instruction and virtual learning groups on social media. A research-developed psychological instrument about learners’ social goals in the blended learning settings was constructed with expert validity to know students' motivation about socializing activities. The EFA showed that students’ social goals consisted of “intimacy and belongingness (IB)” and “mutual assisting (MA).” Primarily, learners’ social behavior for MA was positively associated with their perceived task value about Statistics and their grit (i.e., consistency in learning interest and perseverance). Students need to be socially engaged with their classmates to better fulfill the course requirement.
