Teacher Leadership Development: The Value of Boundary-Crossing Spaces

Sat, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This proposal describes how a group of teachers from different points in their careers negotiate the development of their leadership within a collaborative, online community. It examines, within de Certeau’s (1984) framework of tactics and strategies and the use of Santoro’s (2017) craft of conscience, how teachers made collective sense of teacher leadership. Two major themes emerged from the qualitative analysis, the complex interplay among tactics and strategies within learning spaces and a more notion of teacher voice. Additionally, teachers engage with leadership activity and use their voice as a way to enact craft of conscience, to sustain alignment of their practice with their personal sense of integrity within a system and structure that may or not support their values.
