Learning Design and Integration of Technology for Emergency Remote Teaching

Abstract

Despite the significant shift to remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a paucity of research on how K-12 teachers adapted to the new modality, particularly in terms of their learning design. This study examines how secondary school teachers planned their teaching in the emergency remote context. We analyzed English and science lesson plans (N=22) with the purpose of determining teachers’ ways of designing for remote teaching and related use of technological resources. Our analysis revealed a shift towards student-centered learning activities and process-oriented use of available technological resources. The preliminary results of the lesson plan analysis provide insight into how teachers design learning environments to engage learners in active learning processes in remote contexts.
