This three-year research explores how secondary teacher candidates in a southern California credentialing program are approaching equity: 1) In what ways are teacher candidates addressing universal design for learning and differentiation in their lesson plans? 2) How do teacher candidates articulate equity in the lesson plans through use of identity development, skill development, intellect development, and criticality? The data collected included student lesson plans, reflections, surveys, observations, and course materials. The evidence indicates that teacher candidates were able to: prioritize skill and intellect development, use students’ identity as a basis for their curriculum and instruction, and begin developing a sociopolitical consciousness as a tool to critique the world to enact change and create equity.
