How could conceptual boundaries open new possibilities when engaging in creative processes? The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of setting boundaries on creating narrative images that facilitate multimodal communication and play. An instructional design project evolved as a multidisciplinary collaboration between university students, their instructors, and a local elementary school. The boundaries in student-teachers’ artmaking proved to be windows to meaningful artistic expression for producing narrative images and transforming part of an elementary school’s yard pavement into a multimodal play area. The significance of this study lies on how narrative art which affords creative openings can encourage flexible thinking when engaging in creative problem solving to plan an educational storytelling game.
