Promoting Career Readiness in Alabama High Schools

Abstract

Several states administer large-scale assessments of career readiness to numerous high school students. In an effort to better understand practices promoting career readiness, hierarchical linear models (HLM) were fit to data from the state of Alabama to identify schools that overperformed, relative to expectations, on ACT WorkKeys (i.e., schools with large positive residuals). Those schools were surveyed to learn about how they prepare students for WorkKeys and generally promote successful transitions to the world of work. The survey responses from these schools can be used by other schools in Alabama and across the US to improve career readiness among high school students.
