The dearth of historically underrepresented minorities (URMs) in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) faculty positions is one of the most significant challenges in higher education in the US. To serve the goal of increasing underrepresented groups' success in academia through their retention in tenure-track faculty roles, NSF established the Alliances of Graduate Education and Professoriate (AGEP) program to advance knowledge about models to improve pathways to the professoriate. In the current study, we seek to understand the landscape of AGEP alliances through mapping their theories of change based on semi-structured interviews with seventeen AGEP alliances’ core teams. Our results have revealed interesting patterns and raises questions for both the AGEP community and the broader community of diversifying STEM.
