Abstract

Purpose: We explore how conceptualizing research and evaluation as creative endeavors, particularly in arts-informed approaches to co-production, creates opportunities to move knowledge into action. By examining context + mechanism = outcome configurations (CMOCs), we develop sensible lessons about how insights from qualitative scholarship can travel between settings. Methods: Multi-case design and cross-case analysis of three studies that used arts-informed approaches to promote evidence use in K-12 education systems. Findings: Two CMOCs emerged from our cross-case analysis of co-production and the arts: (1) how they enabled new ways of building mutual understanding among partners involved, leading to more positive attitudes about co-production; and (2) how they simultaneously ensured findings were relevant and useful as well as seeded interest in future collaboration.
