Coaching to Strong Instruction: Examining the Efficacy of Instructional Coaching for Early Career Teachers

Abstract

The current study seeks to understand the impact of ongoing instructional coaching on teacher-level outcomes. Using data from coaching logs, teacher surveys, and classroom observations, we employ regression methodology to find positive benefits of instructional coaching on teacher mindsets and instructional practice. Results illuminate the efficacy of instructional coaching for teachers within their first five years of initial certification and highlights potential mechanisms of effective coaching that lead to positive change in teacher practice. Teacher developers and instructional leaders can use findings to plan, develop and implement evidence-based instructional coaching programming designed to positively benefit instructional practice
