Consultation and Collaboration: Research Process and Practice Alongside the Mẽbêngôkre-Kayapó

Abstract

This paper details the consultative, participatory research process undertaken alongside the Mẽbêngôkre-Kayapó community of A’Ukre in the Terra Indigena Kayapó, Pará, Brazil. Since 1992, A’Ukre has been the community collaborator within a transnational, research and education based, multi-sector partnership. To understand the perspective the community, I engaged in a multi-year, consultative process alongside community leaders and residents across multiple forums. Together, we co-designed a research process that worked for and with community members. The result was more than 100 filmed participatory interviews capturing more individual histories and experiences. This paper details the process and practical considerations of transcultural, transnational research in collaboration with one Indigenous Amazon community.
