Preparing Preservice Teachers for Globalization by Critiquing Controversial Issues in These Uncertain Times: Cultivating Equitable Education Systems

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the “Global village” metaphor that highlights globalization, that is, world interdependence and interconnections (authors, 2020). Especially evident is the disruption of global structures and systems (Shrestha et al., 2020) during a pandemic. Additionally, recent events in the United States on race issues and continued marginalization of people of color calls for education faculty to prepare teachers for culturally responsive teaching. This session, then, will discuss globalization perspectives held by preservice teachers enrolled in a social studies methods course. Qualitative data showed the participants lacked basic understanding of equitable education practices. Other findings pointed to the benefits of using content and teaching strategies that relate to race and ethnicity in the classroom and eradication of racism.
